Quick answer: To check your car insurance in Nigeria, visit askniid.org, click Check Policy → Vehicle Policy, choose Single and enter your vehicle details. Or dial *565*11# on any phone and follow the prompts. If your policy is not found on the Nigerian Insurance Industry Database (NIID), treat it as fake.

A car insurance check takes less than a minute, is free, and can save you from paying for a worthless certificate. Here is exactly how to do it, what the results mean, and what to do if something is wrong.

What Is NIID?

The Nigerian Insurance Industry Database (NIID) is the central record of compulsory insurance policies in Nigeria, including motor third-party insurance. It is owned and run by the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA), the body that represents licensed insurance companies.

When a licensed insurer sells you a motor policy, it uploads the policy to NIID. Police and other law enforcement agencies use the same database to check certificates at checkpoints. In other words, if your policy is not on NIID, it does not legally exist, no matter how official your paper certificate looks.

Why You Must Check Your Car Insurance

  • Fake certificates are common. NIID data reported by BusinessDay showed that only about 3.4 million of an estimated 12 million vehicles in Nigeria were captured as genuinely insured at the end of January 2022.
  • A fake policy pays nothing. If you cause an accident, there is no insurer behind a fake certificate, so you pay the other person’s costs yourself.
  • The penalties are now heavy. Under the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act 2025, driving without valid insurance can attract a fine of up to ₦250,000 for a first offence and ₦500,000 for repeat offences, with possible imprisonment.
  • Enforcement is active. The Nigeria Police Force began nationwide enforcement of compulsory third-party insurance on 1 February 2025.

How to Check Car Insurance Online (askniid.org)

  1. Go to askniid.org on your phone or computer.
  2. Click Check Policy in the menu, then select Vehicle Policy.
  3. At Step 1, choose Single for one vehicle, or Fleet if you are checking a company’s vehicles.
  4. Enter the vehicle details requested, such as your plate (registration) number or policy number, exactly as written on your documents.
  5. Submit and read the result. A genuine policy shows the insurer’s name and the policy’s validity period.

Tip: type the plate number without extra spaces or dashes if the first search returns nothing, then try again in the exact format on your vehicle licence.

How to Check Car Insurance With USSD (*565*11#)

No data or smartphone? Dial *565*11# on any network and follow the prompts to verify your motor insurance. This is the quickest option at a checkpoint or when buying a used car on the spot.

How to Check With the askNIID Mobile App

The NIA also offers an askNIID mobile app, available from the “Download askNIID Mobile” link on askniid.org. It is useful if you check vehicles often, for example as a fleet manager, car dealer or ride-hailing driver.

What Your NIID Result Means

ResultWhat it meansWhat to do
Policy found, insurer named, dates currentYour policy is genuine and activeKeep a screenshot along with your certificate
Policy found but expiredYour cover has lapsedRenew immediately; driving uninsured is an offence
Insurer on NIID differs from your certificatePossible error or forged documentContact the insurer named on your certificate directly
No record foundThe policy is likely fake, or was never uploadedSee the steps below

What to Do If Your Policy Is Not on NIID

  1. Re-check your details. A single wrong character in the plate number will return no result.
  2. Call the insurer directly using the phone number on the insurer’s official website, not the number printed on your certificate, which could also be fake.
  3. Ask for your policy to be uploaded if the insurer confirms it is genuine. Licensed insurers are responsible for uploading the policies they sell.
  4. If the insurer has no record, the certificate is fake. Buy a genuine policy straight away from a licensed insurer’s website, app or office. Third-party cover for a private car costs ₦15,000 a year.
  5. Report the seller to the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and, where appropriate, the police.

How to Avoid Fake Car Insurance

  • Buy only from licensed insurers through their official websites, apps or branch offices, or through a licensed broker.
  • Be suspicious of cheap third-party cover. The private-car rate is ₦15,000 a year. Offers at ₦5,000 come from the pre-2023 price list or from fraudsters.
  • Don’t send your driver or mechanic to “get papers” from a licensing office or motor park.
  • Pay into company accounts only, never into a personal account.
  • Verify on NIID the same day you buy or renew.

Check the Other Driver’s Insurance After an Accident

NIID is not just for your own car. After a collision, ask for the other driver’s plate number and check their insurance on askniid.org or with *565*11# before you leave the scene. If their policy is genuine, you can claim up to ₦3 million for damage to your car from their insurer, even if you only have third-party cover yourself. Our third-party insurance guide explains how to make that claim.

Buying a Used Car? Check Its Insurance History Too

When buying a Nigerian-used car, a quick NIID check on the plate number shows whether the seller has kept the car properly insured, which is a good sign of a careful owner. Always remember that insurance does not transfer automatically when you buy a car: you need your own policy in your name before driving it away.
